Church Bulletin

We are at the start of a very busy and exciting week in the life of St Andrew’s and St Andy’s church, as we meet and interview the candidates who have applied to be our new vicar. I’ll talk more about that in my message at the end of the week. Although, I would ask you to please pray for the four candidates and those who will be involved in the selection process.

Before we even meet the candidates, there has been plenty of work to do in preparation for their arrival. We have had to plan for the Familiarisation Day, which is an opportunity for the candidates to meet the PCC and familiarise themselves with the parish and church. We have been busy setting up meetings and visits for them. ‘Military like’ plans have been put into place to make sure the candidates arrive at the right location at the right time. All of which has been made more complex, as we ensure they meet current Covid guidance. Then of course we have spent time in prayer as we pray for God’s guidance.

Alongside this, a group of volunteers have been busy cleaning the church and the vicarage in preparation for the week’s events. This included cutting the grass at the front of church and tidying up the vast vicarage gardens. Activities such as cutting grass, tackling the brambles and bushes were required to ensure everywhere looked neat and tidy.

This preparation has only been possible through the willing volunteers who have stepped forward and offered their services. Some have been spending time with a spade, fork, mower or hedge trimmer in the garden, others have utilised the hoover or used good old elbow grease to get the vicarage looking its best. Others have offered to make sure the candidates are fed and watered on the day and by driving them round for a guided tour. Others have been holding us in prayer. There have been many people who have stepped forward to help in the preparations and I’d like to thank everyone for your help.

It reminds me of a verse in St Pauls first letter to the Corinthians Ch 3 vs 5-9 where we are reminded that we are all fellow workers in God’s service. God does much of his work on earth through “volunteers” like you and me. Although we are part of a community that’s much bigger than any contribution we may make, we can help it grow by working together to share his love with the world.

Thank you to all those who supported the Vicarage working party on Saturday. It was a morning of hard work, fellowship and laughter, that resulted in everywhere looking fantastic.

This means gelling hands immediately upon arrival, taking your pew straight away as directed by the steward including whether to sit by the wall or the aisle; not moving from your place at any point during the service; and leaving promptly afterwards.

Please could I ask people to hunt in their cupboards for any age children’s books please they no longer require. I am happy to collect from anyone kind enough to donate. Few people, I suspect, will have failed to be affected to some degree by the “feel good” factor and positive energy engendered by football’s European Cup; the involvement of the home nations and restoration of the old rivalries; and, of course, England’s famous victory over Germany and the optimism inspired by a young and improving team and a fresh and unifying approach under an impressive manager. What is more, 40.000 spectators were at Wembley to celebrate the goals and victory over Germany with apparently unrestrained joy!! At Wimbledon, we have seen encouraging progress by our young British players, as well as Andy Murray’s exceptional courage and determination to be keeping the crowds on the edges of their seats once more, as he returns to the top flight following hip surgery and two years’ absence. And perhaps the most inspiring moment of all was when the first day crowd on the Centre Court gave a full minute’s spontaneous standing ovation to one of the invited guests, as Dame Sarah Gilbert, the scientist who co-designed the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, was shown on screen and introduced. These are all most encouraging, and signs that we seem to be moving towards some form of normality and the stated hope that all legal restrictions may indeed come to an end on July 19th.

One of the positive lessons I have learned during the pandemic is to take more time out to be still in the presence of the Lord – “to bask in God’s love”, as one friend put it, to reflect and appreciate all His blessings, the generosity of God’s gifts and the wonders and beauty of His creation. Yet there has been and still is so much to do, and there is maybe a danger that we will revert to old ways without learning the lessons of the past 15 months. As Covid restrictions are gradually eased and things change (and the body is slower to respond!!), I can occasionally feel some of the old tensions returning. It becomes harder to keep on top of the phone calls, e-mails and text messages that keep us connected to each other; harder too to make space for the Lord.   Last week, Lesley quoted from Sarah Young’s devotional book, “Jesus Calling”. And the message for yesterday imagined Jesus urging us to “Be willing to fight for this precious time with me”. I will continue to do so, as prayer underpins everything that we do, and awareness of God’s love, along with praise and thanksgiving for His goodness, is the only path to true peace (Philippians 4: 4-7). So I do hope that, as we rejoice and relax into whatever the “new normal” looks like, we will learn the lessons and continue to show love and concern for each other – and especially the anxious and vulnerable, but also to take time to “bask in God’s love” and give Him all the praise, thanks and glory for all His goodness to us – including His plans for the football, tennis and to bring us a new vicar!!

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46: 10)

Doreen Hand

An interment of ashes for Doreen Hand will take place at 2pm on Saturday 10th July. Doreen will be laid to rest with her husband John in the cremation area of the churchyard.

My trusted and reliable old washing machine/drier did not owe me anything!  After all, it had served us very well since it was installed as one of the semi-integrated appliances in the new kitchen that Pam and I planned and watched evolve about 30 years ago – and it has served me well since Pam died; all I had to do was press a couple of buttons and hey presto!!  Likewise the dishwasher, which died over a year ago.  I can manage comfortably washing dishes without a dishwasher, but a washing machine is different!  And, last week, that too gave up the ghost.  The visiting engineer declared that not only was neither machine repairable, but, horror of horrors, they were obsolete; no company manufactured semi-integrated machines anymore and I would have to consider a new and different style. I am not good at change, adhering rather to the adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it!”!! Sometimes, however, change is thrust upon us and we have no choice! So, discussions commenced; options were considered, measurements taken and preferences expressed (and dismissed for various practical reasons).  Finally, a decision was made. On Thursday, a brand new washer/drier and dishwasher were delivered and, on Friday, the engineer turned up to fit them, though not even sure at the time that he could make them fit properly!  4 hours later, and after some minor adaptations and a lot of prayer, I not only had a new look and fully operational washer/drier and dishwasher, but he had cleaned out the old plumbing and replaced worn parts, which were on the point of disintegrating and causing serious problems!! It may take a little while to get used to the new look and new operation, but I am already finding that the new machine is operating smoothly and offers new and interesting possibilities that the old one did not.  Praise the Lord.

Now I know that this may not be applicable to every situation and I am fully aware of the lovely prayer, “God, grant me the grace to accept with serenity the things that I cannot change; the courage to change the things that I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.” And I am not trying to draw exact parallels with the current situation in our church; but it did occur to me that there are maybe a few similarities: former trusted, reliable and familiar ways are not easily relinquished; changes thrust upon us can be both uncomfortable and challenging; but also that God’s love for us never changes; and that, with prayer, faith and trust in Him, not only will all be well, but there may also be new possibilities, that may challenge us and take a bit of getting used to, but may also prove to be exciting and ensure continued effective performance – in the case of the church, worshipping and serving the Lord, bringing the light of His love to His people and seeking to build His kingdom.  So, as the church embarks upon the next stage of seeking our new vicar, let us pray with faith and thanksgiving for all concerned and involved, and put our trust in the Lord.

“Behold, I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21: 5)                                     

“For we know that all things work together for good for those that love God.” (Romans 8: 28)

Church Bulletin

I am sure that, like me, you have memories of receiving special gifts in your life – a surprise gift that you did not expect; particularly memorable Christmas presents when you were a child; amazing birthday treats.  For me, I can still remember the Christmas I received my dolls house.  It had its own garage and came with a beautiful red racing car.  I adored it.  One birthday (when I was in my late 30s, I think), my two children presented me with a brand-new bicycle.  I remember discovering it standing in the centre of my living-room proudly adorned with bows of ribbon.  I felt 11 years of age all over again! 

It makes us feel good to give gifts too.  One of the hardships of this Lockdown, was not being able to see my London Grandchildren open their presents.  A WhatsApp thank you call was lovely in its way – but not the same. 

Of course, gifts do not necessarily have to be materialistic.  Despite the awful negatives, we have experienced amazing gifts during this pandemic.  That wondrous Spring, we enjoyed last year when everything was at a standstill, and we had “time to stand and stare” and listen. The support of friends and neighbours; the Thursday evening applause for the NHS and Frontline Workers; the smile and friendly greeting from complete strangers and, not least, the discovery of effective vaccines.  It’s not that I deny the severity of the challenges –   far from it.  I remember the fear, the sense of isolation, separation from loved ones, not being able to receive or give hugs, the dreadful loss of life and exhausted faces of hospital staff. But, amidst the darkness, I recognised bright streams of light. 

Below I have copied out the words for today from a little devotional book I use called ‘Jesus Calling’ by Sarah Young.  Sarah has been inspired to write each message for the day as if directly from God.  The Bible references support the text.  May these words be a gift to you.

‘Open your hands and your heart to receive this day as a precious gift from Me.  I begin each day with a sunrise, announcing My radiant Presence.  By the time you rise from your bed, I have already prepared the way before you.  I eagerly await your first conscious thought.  I rejoice when you glance My way.

Bring Me the gift of thanksgiving, which opens your heart to rich communion with Me.  Because I am God, from whom all blessings flow, thankfulness is the best way to draw near Me.  Sing praise songs to Me; tell of My wondrous works.  Remember that I take great delight in you; I rejoice over you with singing.’

Church Bulletin

Well, today is 21^st June – a date we had hoped would see us enter phase 4 of the Government’s Covid roadmap with the ending of all legal restrictions on social contact.  Regretfully, it was not to be, and I am sure that I was not the only one who was not surprised when Boris informed us that Phase 4 would be delayed and that it would be sensible to wait “just a little longer”. Now we have a new date – 19th July – in which to place our hope. 

‘Hope’ – how awful our world would be if we did not have that wonderful gift.  God given, of course. We can be in the darkest of situations, on the brink of despair, and that tiny whisper of hope seems to stealthily enter our soul and bring light. And, yes, not all our hopes are fulfilled, but they can ease some of the pain, help us cope and sometimes guide us to new solutions. Our God, who is the God of Love, is also the God of Hope. As Paul says in his letter to the Romans:

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”   Roman 15; 13.

21st June is special for another important reason; some of us will be visiting Pontesbury today to see Greg and Fran in their new parish and participate in a special church service of celebration. May God bless all involved abundantly.

As we wish Greg and Fran much joy, love and success in Pontesbury, it is with hope that we look to our own future. You may have already heard from Nick that we have had six applicants for the position of vicar and that shortlisting will be taking place this Thursday.  Please hold all in prayer – applicants, the selection team and all our church family – and may our God of Love and Hope show us the way forward.

Update on the appointment of a new Vicar for St Andrews and St Andy’s Eastern Green

The closing date for applications was last Friday and I’m pleased to let you know that we received 6 applications. The Archdeacon and representatives from the Parish (Nick Tooby, Sue Masters and Liz Reed), along with the Area Dean, will be meeting on Thursday to shortlist the best candidates for interview. The interviews will take place on the 7th and 8th July. Please keep everyone in your prayers as we seek to appoint the person God is leading to the post.

On-line Service Streaming Project

You are probably wondering what has happened with this project since we made an appeal for donations earlier in the year. Firstly, I’d like to say thank you to all those who donated, because with the money raised from the Parish, alongside some Grants we received, we now have enough money to fund the project.

Plenty of work has been going on behind the scenes over the past few months. We have been seeking quotes and guidance on the best equipment to install. Work has been undertaken to look at the implications on the building of placing the new cameras etc.

We have now appointed a company to install the equipment. We received authority on Friday to install Broadband into the church, this will be completed within the next two weeks. The next stage is to develop the faculty application to be submitted to the Diocese to get authority to install camera and sound system. We are working towards a September date to be able to start streaming our first services.

Church Bulletin

At the beginning of this week, I spoke about resilience and remembering, marking the past and looking forward in hope.  Today I want to encourage you in that hope as we look forward as a church and community. Today is the final day for applications for Vicar of St. Andrew’s Church. The end of this part of a process, that began when Greg was called by God to do His work in another place, but also the beginning of another phase, as those whom God has called will send their applications for the post of Vicar. We remember the past and the legacy of Greg and those who went before him, as we look forward to the plans that God has for our future and the person who will join us in that future.

I have recently been using a prayer app called Lectio 365, which I know others have also been using. It offers a short time of reflection based on a passage from the Bible and this morning’s theme was expectancy. As we wait on God, we are called to wait in expectancy; that God has a plan for us, that he hears us when we call to him, and that he holds us in the waiting.  Very poignant I feel for us at this crossroad, where we look back in thankfulness and ahead in expectation.

So please pray, for those people who God is prompting to consider their future entwinned with us, and also for the process of interviewing and appointing a vicar; praying for God’s wisdom and discernment. Pray in confidence that God knows our hearts, our church and our community, praying in expectation that God will hear our pray.

‘’For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.“ (Jeremiah 29: 11-12)

Church Opening

The church is now open for live worship every Sunday and for private prayer on Thursdays.

Due to limited seating, places may be reserved by contacting Julie on a first come, first served basis. As before, we urge you if you have an invitation not to forget and if you are suddenly unable to attend to let us know at the earliest possible moment. Face masks continue to be required. If you see anyone not wearing a face mask, it is because they have medical exemption. We are not allowing any other exception. It is imperative the rules are strictly adhered to. This means gelling hands immediately upon arrival, taking your pew straight away as directed by the steward including whether to sit by the wall or the aisle; not moving from your place at any point during the service; and leaving promptly afterwards.

After booking a seat, if you find that you are unable to attend a service please inform one of the churchwardens so that it can be offered to another person.

Having had empty pews in previous weeks, we are looking to put together a reserve list of those people who are willing to be contacted at short notice to attend a service. If you would like to be included on this list then please let Julie know.

Covid-19 Drop in Vaccination Clinics

Are you aged 40 and over and haven’t had your Covid jab? Why not come along to this weekend’s pop-up clinic at Hillfields in Coventry. No appointment is needed, so you can drop-in anytime between 11am to 4pm at a time to suit you.  The clinic will be held at the Village Square, making it easy to stop by on either Saturday, 19th June or Sunday, 20th June.

Second dose drop-in vaccination clinic at Foleshill Family Hub this Saturday 19th June 10am – 2pm, for those who had their first doses in April.

Local people are asked not to attend if they have any symptoms of Covid, including a new continuous cough, a high temperature (above 37.8) or a loss or change to your sense of taste or smell. If you do have symptoms, you must self-isolate and book a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test by ringing 119 or visit: Testing for coronavirus (COVID-19) – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Recruitment of Volunteers at St Andrew’s and St Andy’s

We would like to highlight that all church volunteers must be safely recruited and some volunteers are also required to undergo a DBS check and complete safeguarding modules. This isn’t St Andrew’s being picky, it is a legal requirement stipulated by the diocese for every volunteer role.

As lockdown eases, we must now be vigilant and ensure all the necessary checks are completed.

If you are a church volunteer and have not yet been safely recruited, please contact Julie (Parish Administrator) at administrator@standrews-eg.org.uk or Linda Chylinski (Parish Safeguarding Officer) at onelindilou@gmail.com to arrange for this to be completed.

All members of the PCC must ensure that they complete Parish Safeguarding module C0 (Basic safeguarding Awareness) which is available online.

Children’s Books

Aldermoor Farm school have really depleted stocks of children’s books in their library. Many have disappeared and funding is now low to restock. Please could I ask people to hunt in their cupboards for any age children’s books please they no longer require.  I am happy to collect from anyone kind enough to donate. How confusing!  Within a week we have seen the launch of Euro 2020 and Coventry 2021 -City of Cultural. The football postponed from last summer, the City of Culture launch from the beginning of this year.  Both are events that bring people together, through a shared heritage and civic and national pride, to celebrate, to mark achievements and to look to the future. Personally, the City of Culture launch stirred me more than that of Euro 2020; which for me conjures up that feeling many people have about Marmite!

It has felt like we have lost a year and that 2020 happened in a miasma of restrictions and fear, coupled with hope and resilience. And resilience has been one of the themes at the start of Coventry’s City of Culture. Some of you may have seen and been part of the exhibition entitled Resilience and Remembering held in the Cathedral ruins last week. There, the resilience of our city was marked in a tribute that included remembering the lives lost in the bombing of Coventry during World War Two, and also during the Covid pandemic.  Names were written on ribbons by members of the public and tied to trees, as names of those who lost their lives were read out.  A poignant, immersive setting in the ruins of the cathedral as we sat looking at the new cathedral. Alongside the remembering it highlighted the resilience of the city, its rebirth and its reputation as a site of sanctuary and reconciliation. It invited us to mark the past and to look forward in hope.

So, whether you engage with and are excited by Euro 2020 or City of Culture 2021, or both remember the words from the Epistle of Peter (1 Peter 1:3-5)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, ⁴ and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you

Visit to Pontesbury

Greg & Fran are inviting members of St Andrew’s to a Thanksgiving service on Monday 21st June at 7pm. The service will be held at St George’s in Pontesbury.

The three available arrival times are 2.30pm for the full guided tour; 6pm for buffet or 7pm for service. If you would like to attend, please confirm to Julie or one of the churchwardens by Friday 18th June.

You will need to make your own arrangements to travel to and from Pontesbury.

Building our Faith

At our Wednesday evening Bible Study we are looking at the Parables of Jesus and this week Lesley will be leading us on the Parable of the persistent widow. If you would like to join us the zoom details are below. If you have not been before, or not for a while you are very welcome.
