Church Bulletin

Last Wednesday, our wonderful Sue Masters led the first session of Building our Faith. This season we shall be exploring different images of the Holy Spirit and our focus this week was on The Holy Spirit seen as wind or breath.

Part of our study was focussed on Ezekiel 37; 1-14.   This tells the familiar story of the Valley of Dry Bones. God takes Ezekiel to a valley where all around are dry bones and then asks him to prophesy over them: “I will put breath into you, and you shall live. I will fasten sinews on you, bring flesh upon you, overlay you with skin, and put breath in you and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.” (Ezekiel 37; 6) Ezekiel obeys God and, immediately, the bones join together as skeletons, they are covered with sinews and flesh and they stand up a living, breathing host of men. To be honest, it all sounds rather terrifying and nightmarish, and I know that artists and cartoonists have had a field day interpreting this image graphically. But the whole point of this story is its symbol of hope to the Israelites.

For the Israelites were in despair. Seventy years before, Jerusalem had been conquered by the Babylonians and they had been taken from their homes and exiled to Babylon.   It was their own fault. God had warned them many times, but they had continued to disobey His Law and ignore Him. Their faith, like those bones, was all dried up and lifeless and they needed a sharp lesson. Now God was saying that He was going to breathe new life into the Israelites. “I will put my spirit into you and you shall live; and I will settle you on our own soil, and you shall know that I the Lord have spoken and will act.”   (Ezekiel 37; 14).

I mention all this because during this last year or so, it seems as if we have been experiencing some sort of exile. Yes, we are still on our own soil, but so much has been sacrificed in lives, in work, in education, social interaction and economy.

Not for one moment do I blame God for this. Like the Israelites, we in the world have been given fair warning about our behaviour, our greed, our selfish and thoughtless use of resources at the expense of our environment. Do you remember the purity of air last year when we were in strict Lockdown? The blue skies, the warm sunny days. Are we wiser?   Have we learnt anything? I do hope so.

Let us pray to God, thank him for His mercy and ask Him to breathe afresh His Spirit within us.

Baptism Verger

With the church now open for public worship we are seeing an increase in requests for baptisms and therefore have an urgent need to add some people to our Baptism Verger rota. Baptisms take place after the morning service on Sundays usually at 12 noon and last about an hour to hour and half. If you are interested, please let Julie or the Churchwardens know and training can be arranged. This role is important as you will be the welcoming face of St Andrew’s to people who may not have been to church before. A fixed rate is paid for each baptism.

Church Opening

The church has now re-opened for live worship every Sunday and will also open for private prayer on Thursdays.

Due to limited seating, places may be reserved by contacting Julie on a first come, first served basis. As before, we urge you if you have an invitation not to forget and if you are suddenly unable to attend to let us know at the earliest possible moment. Face masks continue to be required. If you see anyone not wearing a face mask, it is because they have medical exemption. We are not allowing any other exception. It is imperative the rules are strictly adhered to. This means gelling hands immediately upon arrival, taking your pew straight away as directed by the steward including whether to sit by the wall or the aisle; not moving from your place at any point during the service; and leaving promptly afterwards.

After booking a seat, if you find that you are unable to attend a service please inform one of the churchwardens so that it can be offered to another person.

As there were empty pews on Sunday we are looking to put together a reserve list of those people who are willing to be contacted at short notice to attend a service. If you would like to be included on this list then please let Julie know.

Dogs in Churchyard

Due to an increasing amount of dog fouling in the churchyard we must ask dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead and ensure that any poop is bagged and binned.

Help Needed for an English Conversation Class

Are you a native English speaker? St Andy’s have started running a conversation class for refugees and asylum seekers in the Tile Hill area. We need volunteers to help run the conversation class on Wednesdays, 11.15am-12, currently meeting on Zoom. All you need is to be able to speak English and love God! If you are interested, please contact Sue Best (susanbest369@btinternet.com/07837488721).

As we are opening the church again from Easter Day, our thoughts are turning back to cleaning the building. Currently, we have a very small team who are on the rota to clean once a week. The team is Phil and Denise Davies, Diane Wilson, Becky Crowe and I who clean on a voluntary basis. Ideally, we would like to add some more volunteers to help us.

It normally takes a couple of hours to clean the church and side room (we are not cleaning upstairs currently) to make sure it is ready for a service on Sunday.

Cleaning of the building is important at the moment, not just to show visitors that the church is cared for, but also as part of the arrangements to allow us to open the church safely. Would you be able to help? If so, please email me at nicktooby@btinternet.com

Church Bulletin

As a Franciscan, I am supposed to live simply.   Needless to say, I am not successful. This was very apparent a fortnight ago when I packed for a week’s holiday in Wales with my daughter and her family. Despite efforts to minimalize, I still found myself filling my suitcase, taking my laptop, mobile, kindle and their chargers, books, various footwear and appropriate toiletries. Fortunately, I was in my car. I suspect I would have minimalized it a great deal more had I been on a train.

As I reflected on this it led me to think of Robin Trew, who was vicar at All Saints’ Church, Allesley for many years. He would often go on Pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) – following one of the ancient pilgrim routes in Europe which eventually lead to Santiago de Compestela (The Tomb of St. James) in Spain. He completed the route in stages, over a number of years. I remember him sharing how the first time he went, despite warnings from friends, he took far too much and learnt the hard way, that baggage gets heavier and heavier when walking. When he returned the following year, he reduced his baggage to the barest minimum – one change of clothes and absolute essentials all kept in a small backpack.  

This, of course, is all rather allegorical if we relate it to our life journey. We all carry emotional baggage, sometimes far too much. We are human, we have made mistakes. We have hurt others. Others have hurt us. Such baggage can really weigh us down, getting heavier and heavier. We need to minimalize, and we do that by committing our baggage to God. Scripture instructs us, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you” 1 Peter 5:7. It’s an offer that we can take the Lord up on with each new day. Regardless of what happened in our lives today, yesterday, last week, or last year, every morning is a new opportunity to start over.

Church Bulletin

In Monday’s bulletin I spoke about transformation, the transforming power of God in our lives.  This theme of transformation has continued as this week I had my first hair appointment in 21 weeks, Halleluiah, I have emerged from the ear muffs and shaggy fringe into a newish woman!

This week was important for us as a church as we have completed the first stage of the process to find a new vicar. At an open meeting on zoom we presented the Parish Profile, an outline of the church which will be important in attracting people to consider if God is calling them to serve Him and us at St. Andrew’s. As we look at who we are as a church, and at how we serve God by serving others, God’s transforming power and love is very evident. The profile also looks forward at our vision for the future as God continues to transform us as individuals and as church family.

We ask you to continue to pray for this important time in the life of our church remembering the words of St. Paul in Ephesians (3:17-21).

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

A reminder that from Tuesday 13 April people aged 45 and over are being invited to book their appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine at a large vaccination site including Stoneleigh NAEC or at a community pharmacy. People can book through the national booking centre Book a coronavirus vaccination – NHS (www.nhs.uk) or by calling 119 free of charge.

Text messages and letters will be sent to eligible patients by NHS England.

Patients are asked not to contact their GP.

Book Club

Have you ever thought about joining a book club, been a member of one in the past or thought that’s not for me? Is now the time to think about being part of St. Andrew’s book club?

We set up the book club two years ago and although interrupted briefly by Covid have continued to meet over zoom. Some members have recently left the area and so we are relaunching and looking to encourage more people to join.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8th June at 7.30pm on zoom (We hope to resume in person meetings at a later date). The book we have chosen is The Shack by William P Young. This is a novel published in 2008 and is a story of how a grief-stricken man’s encounter with God changes his life forever. You may have read it before but we felt it was worth revisiting.

We would love more people to join with us to read and discuss the book.  If you have any questions please contact Sue Masters on 07958 322026.

Yesterday at St Andrew’s we said farewell to Phil and Anne Richardson as they prepare to leave Coventry for their new Parish in Hampshire. It was great to be part of Phil’s final service at St Andrew’s and to hear Phil preach. In his sermon Phil spoke about transformation; the transformation of Peter as he steps out in faith and steps up in the role ordained for him by Jesus. Peter’s transformation made possible thorough Christ’s love and sacrifice and this transformation Phil reminded us, is offered to all. We are transformed by the love of Christ as we repent and accept his forgiveness, transformed through faith and the healing power of Christ.

As we say farewell to Phil and to Anne, we are aware of that transformation in them and in their ministry as they step out on a new path with God; transformed by the Holy Spirit and part of the ongoing transformation of our church and community here in Coventry. We know that God will bless them in their new church and we hold them in prayer as they continue to be part of God’s transforming love.

Covid-19

Rates in Coventry – we are seeing a positive reduction in those testing positive in the city alongside hospital admissions too which is great news. However, with the easing of lockdown measures we all must continue to be vigilant when we are out to help keep rates low. Remember to wear your face mask in the required settings, keep your space from those you do not live with, and wash your hands regularly.

We have heard the sad news that Beryl died last Sunday. Beryl had been a member of St Andrew’s church for many years. We send our prayers and thoughts to her family at this sad time.

Parish Profile Meeting

Many of you will have heard me mention the Parish Profile. Many of you I expect are not clear on what this document is and what it’ll be used for. Last Monday the PCC signed off our Parish Profile document and the churchwardens and PCC are keen to make sure that those who wish to know more, have the chance to find out. Therefore, on Thursday 22nd April at 7:30pm, we will be holding a Zoom meeting for anyone who would like to join us when we will outline and explain what’s included and its importance to filling the vacancy for a new vicar. Help Needed for an English Conversation Class

Are you a native English speaker? St Andy’s have started running a conversation class for refugees and asylum seekers in the Tile Hill area. We need volunteers to help run the conversation class on Wednesdays, 11.15am-12, currently meeting on Zoom. All you need is to be able to speak English and love God! If you are interested, please contact Sue Best (susanbest369@btinternet.com/07837488721).

Cleaning the Church

As we are opening the church again from Easter Day, our thoughts are turning back to cleaning the building. Currently, we have a very small team who are on the rota to clean once a week. The team is Phil and Denise Davies, Diane Wilson, Becky Crowe and I who clean on a voluntary basis. Ideally, we would like to add some more volunteers to help us.

It normally takes a couple of hours to clean the church and side room (we are not cleaning upstairs currently) to make sure it is ready for a service on Sunday.

Cleaning of the building is important at the moment, not just to show visitors that the church is cared for, but also as part of the arrangements to allow us to open the church safely. Would you be able to help? If so, please email me at nicktooby@btinternet.com

The date of the church’s annual meeting has been set for Monday 17th May at 7.30pm via zoom. The access codes to join the meeting will be available nearer the time.

The APCM will elect churchwardens and PCC members. If you are an existing PCC member, would you please let Julie know if you are willing to stand next year by 10th May or if you are interested in standing, please let the one of the churchwardens know.

Children’s Society Boxes

it’s that time of year, so if you have a money collection box can you either leave it in church please, or contact me to collect it. I will not be able to personally collect the boxes till mid-April. Youth Wellbeing Course

St Andrew’s is running a 6-week course on youth wellbeing for ages 8-14 on Wednesdays 6pm-7pm via zoom. Starting April 21st. For more information contact Emma on standrewscovyouth@gmail.com.

Building Our Faith

Following completion of our Lent series our Wednesday evening Bible study will be taking a break over the Easter period. We restart on Wednesday 28th April at 7.30pm on zoom. All are welcome to join us, Sue Masters.

Book Club

Have you ever thought about joining a book club, been a member of one in the past or thought that’s not for me? Is now the time to think about being part of St. Andrew’s book club?

We set up the book club two years ago and although interrupted briefly by Covid have continued to meet over zoom. Some members have recently left the area and so we are relaunching and looking to encourage more people to join.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8th June at 7.30pm on zoom (We hope to resume in person meetings at a later date). The book we have chosen is The Shack by William P Young. This is a novel published in 2008 and is a story of how a grief-stricken man’s encounter with God changes his life forever. You may have read it before but we felt it was worth revisiting.

We would love more people to join with us to read and discuss the book. If you have any questions please contact Sue Masters on 07958 322026.

Church Bulletin

It is difficult to summarise what a place and people mean to you in just a few sentences, but given this is my last Bulletin message and I only have a couple of weeks left at St Andrew’s & St Andy’s, I will try!

There’s a picture on the St Andrew’s website of a leaving do for a couple that had been at St Andrew’s for years (I cannot remember their names!). Anne and I are in that picture, because we had just joined St Andrew’s and had been invited along to the occasion. That we were invited to this, even though we were new and didn’t even know the people leaving, and thus ended up in the big ‘family photo’ has always felt like a blessing to me, and reflects an inclusive quality that St Andrews and St Andy’s has.

Hebrews 13v2 says “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” We may not be angels, but welcoming and showing hospitality to newcomers has such a high value in Scripture. It is my hope that when Covid restrictions ease and things begin to open up, you can begin doing it again as before 🙂

We have heard the sad news that Beryl died last Sunday. Beryl had been a member of St Andrew’s church for many years. We send our prayers and thoughts to her family at this sad time.

Parish Profile Meeting

Last Monday the PCC signed off our Parish Profile document and the churchwardens and PCC are keen to make sure that those who wish to know more, have the chance to find out. Prince Philip Thanksgiving Service

A Civic Service of Thanksgiving for the life of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is to be held at Coventry Cathedral on Friday 16th April at 6pm. People will be able to watch the event live on the Cathedral’s Facebook page:

The church has now re-opened for live worship every Sunday and will also open for private prayer on Thursdays.

Due to limited seating, places may be reserved by contacting Julie on a first come, first served basis. As before, we urge you if you have an invitation not to forget and if you are suddenly unable to attend to let us know at the earliest possible moment. Face masks continue to be required. If you see anyone not wearing a face mask, it is because they have medical exemption. We are not allowing any other exception. It is imperative the rules are strictly adhered to. This means gelling hands immediately upon arrival, taking your pew straight away as directed by the steward including whether to sit by the wall or the aisle; not moving from your place at any point during the service; and leaving promptly afterwards.

Church Bulletin

“I DID IT!”. This has become a little catchphrase around our house, as it is what Ella says when she completes a task, like stacking bricks or colouring in a picture. We like to celebrate our accomplishments, (and so we should!) but at Easter we celebrate that Jesus “DID IT” by dying on the cross for our sins. Just before He died, his last words were “It is finished”, because he completed the work he came to do. That means, for you and I, we get to live in the love, joy and peace of the Kingdom of God, not because WE did it but because HE did!

Reporting Issues with your Street

We want to help clean up your neighbourhood. So we want to let you know about the fixmystreet app (all one word). It is another great app that is connected to your local authority and it enables you to report issues to them quickly and efficiently.

You can download this from the Apple Appstore however the app is also available on android devices. Simply find and confirm your location, take a picture of what you’re reporting, give it a title and the fill in a description of what it is. It’s so simple and takes 2 minutes.
